Product Concept Design

Study of the form and function of the idea

We work together to produce a range of innovative concept designs. These are then presented to you in an interim product design and development review, allowing you to choose in which direction your product will progress.

The Moderator is the brainchild of British entrepreneur Grant Penfield, whose father died from lung cancer at 48 after a 60-a day-habit. He says: “I was determined to think of a way not only to prevent children from growing up with heavy smokers but to deter them from smoking and drinking in the first place.”

The Bristol-based firm designs, makes and sells heated gloves for sport and leisure and has distributors in five countries.
In fact, until recently the business had just one employee: its founder Tony Curtis. That’s because virtually every aspect of the business is outsourced, including manufacturing, accounts and bookkeeping,

A HAMPSHIRE mum has secured the backing of a millionaire TV businessman with her portable toilet invention. Kate Castle, 35, took her BoginaBag idea onto hit BBC show Dragon’s Den in the hope of landing a much-needed investment. The innovation at first glance looks exactly like a standard camping chair, but a cover over the top can be removed to create a toilet-seat.

Two enterprising mothers have been busy celebrating their first invention – a light up potty. Kerry Marriott, 35, and Rachael Forder, 40, from Southsea, Hampshire, came up with the idea when they realised their own youngsters were finding it difficult to locate the toilet in the dark. The pair hope their LumiPotti, which illuminates when movement is detected, will go on sale in December priced at around £16.

Our Design Process

Further Questions on New Product Development Process?

Why do I need to design and develop my idea?

Almost every project without exception will need to have been designed and developed before protecting or approaching industry. Our product design services can add value and credibility to your project, and make your presentation more professional. Without a design for your product your project is just an idea and you cannot protect or market ideas.

Why is it important when protecting my idea?

In order to submit an application you need to know exactly what it is you are protecting.

It is better to write the application around your designed product than it is to try and design a product around something you have already written.

Sometimes, through design, further intellectual property can be created which can strengthen your patent application. By designing the product you will have the relevant patent drawings in the correct format to submit with your application and help to define the novel features of the design.

Why is it important when marketing my idea?

The product design and development process will provide you with the relevant professional presentation material with which to present your idea to industry reps and investors. Companies will expect a certain level of development to have been completed before even considering your idea – this is particularly the case if you are looking to license. See Selling an Idea – Licensing…

If you are looking to manufacture, then you will need the product designed using Computer Aided Design (CAD) to allow that CAD data to then be used for prototyping.
